Car batteries are more likely to fail in frigid temperatures, and with freezing temperatures over the winter in our region, AAA Western and Central New York members often deal with this inconvenience during the most inopportune time. Enter AAA’s new Battery Bonanza Sweepstakes! The November 10th – 24th event reminds members to get their batteries checked right away, and after the test, they are automatically entered into a sweepstakes to win a $1,000 gift card (no purchase necessary).

During severe weather events, battery-related road service calls can increase five-fold for AAA. Steve Finch, Senior Vice President of Automotive Services at AAA WCNY, says roadside service data shows how “the sheer number of battery calls far outweigh other service calls” during "Code Red" weather events (where roadside assistance call volume peaks).

An average car battery typically lasts three to five years. Drivers should have the battery and charging system tested prior to winter at a service facility or with AAA Mobile Battery Service where available, which is included in AAA membership.

The Battery Bonanza offers an extra incentive for area residents to check their batteries before bad weather hits the region. "When it comes to your car's battery, it's a great idea to be proactive," Finch said. "Let's not wait until a horrible day when it's cold and snowy and you are out in the middle of a snowstorm trying to replace a battery. Let's do it now."

AAA’s battery service trucks are equipped to test and install batteries at any location convenient to you – even in your own driveway, where such battery service is available (may not be offered in all areas). AAA members save $25 off the retail price of a new battery, and AAA batteries are guaranteed for up to 36 months.

Here are some signs that you might be at risk for a battery-related breakdown:

  • Your vehicle cranks slowly when trying to start.
  • You hear a grinding, clicking or buzzing when you turn the ignition on.
  • Your vehicle has stalled.
  • Your headlights dim when you are idling but brighten when you rev the engine.
  • Your battery is more than three years old.

Battery Testing Event
Eleven AAA locations throughout the region will hold free battery testing events on Friday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Furthermore, the sweepstakes is open to non-members in the Western & Central New York area as well.

To enter the contest (no purchase required), get started by going to AAA.com/BatteryBonanza to request a battery test.
