The President’s Choice for 2022

Imagine setting sail along the Rhône River in France’s Provence region as you head out to explore impeccable cuisine, history, and beauty in one of the world’s most remarkable destinations.

We are pleased to present the 2022 AAA Western and Central New York President’s Choice Trip (formerly known as the Member Appreciation Trip). The new name is very fitting as the 2022 river cruise itinerary has been personally chosen by Tony Spada, president and CEO of AAA Western and Central New York.

“I had the pleasure of traveling this route with friends back in 2018, and I enjoyed it so much that I look forward to sharing the experience with our members,” he explained. “After a long, stressful pandemic, people are looking for a lively, memorable travel experience and this opportunity will not disappoint. My wife, Nancy, and I invite you to join us on this exceptional journey.”

Traveling by river cruise on AmaWaterways’ Colors of Provence itinerary offers guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in European culture as the AmaKristina docks right in the heart of each port. Travelers can then choose from a variety of tours, cycling, hiking, and more. As AmaWaterways puts it, “From romantic cities to foodie havens and artistic epicenters, this itinerary enlivens all your senses.”

“This is surely a trip for the tastebuds,” Spada said. “The wine and the chocolate are simply out of this world and definitely irresistible!”

Learn how to pair the two, or simply relax and soak in breathtaking scenery from the world-renowned wine region while sipping local vintages. The trip includes a tour at M. Chapoutier, one of the most recognizable wineries in the Rhône Valley where they’ve been making wines for eight generations thanks to the region's rich soil. There's also a visit to taste Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the most famous French wines, which dates back to a time when the papacy was located in France, not Rome.

From searching for highly prized “Black Diamond” truffles and learning how olives become olive oil, to tracing the steps of famous artists or visiting a papal palace, there’s truly something for everyone on this itinerary where each day will bring something new.

Traveling with fellow AAA members from Western and Central New York is a great way to build new friendships as you explore unique parts of the world together.

The journey begins with a two-night stay in bustling Barcelona, Spain. The river cruise embarks in Avignon, France, the “City of Popes,” and travels north on the Rhone, where guests will see beautiful landscapes that inspired countless artists. Discover Vienne’s Roman past, see why Vincent van Gogh was drawn to the area, or focus on history, gastronomy, and wine tasting. With so many options, each traveler can customize their own itinerary on this trip!

The cruise disembarks in Lyon, France’s culinary capital. But it doesn’t have to end there! Guests are welcome to enjoy a post-cruise visit to Paris where the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame await.

The President’s Choice Trip also offers many special inclusions for AAA members. For more information, please attend the informational sessions planned for later this month. And soon you’ll be able to vividly see why the “Colors of Provence” are so remarkable.
