Back-to-school road safety: Protecting young lives on the go

Drivers should "pack their patience" as traffic increases

AAA reminds motorists to prioritize student safety

This is an exciting time of year for students as they return to the classroom. It’s also an important time of year for drivers as AAA reminds motorists – School’s Open, Drive Carefully.

Unfortunately, when it comes to pedestrian safety, the facts are sobering. In the last decade, more than 25% of child pedestrian fatalities occurred after school, between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Many children walk - or ride their bikes - to and from school. Others travel by car or bus. AAA’s annual School’s Open, Drive Carefully campaign is in its 77th year of reminding drivers to be vigilant and be aware of children on our roads.

All drivers need to recognize the special safety needs of pedestrians and especially young children. It is important to be aware that all pedestrians have the right of way regardless of the rules of the road. Drivers are obligated to exercise great care and extreme caution near a school or playground. Obey all posted speed limits and always stop for school buses with flashing lights.

Keep in mind - children are often the least predictable and the most difficult to see.

As children go back to school, we encourage drivers to take extra care when you see a school bus or drive in residential areas. Here are some helpful reminders:

  • Always stop for a school bus when the lights are flashing
  • Slow down
  • Remove all distractions from the driver – put cell phones down
  • Do not pass other vehicles
  • Obey crossing guards at all times
  • Expect the unexpected
  • Check you mirrors before moving
  • Teach your children the rules of traffic safety

Motorists should also "pack their patience" as the return to school will see increased traffic with additional drivers on the road - including newly licensed drivers returning to high school and college.

PLEASE take extra precautions as we enter the school year and in the process – create safe driving habits that will last a lifetime and save lives.
