Gasoline prices held steady at the national level while continuing to fall in New York, with the average for a gallon of regular down two cents from last week to $3.60. Oil prices have barely budged over the last seven days, trading in the upper $70s to low $80s per barrel this morning. According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand rose slightly last week while total domestic gasoline stocks jumped up. Steady oil prices, tepid demand, and increasing supply are the formula for gas prices to keep falling as summer arrives.

Diesel prices are also moving down. The national average price for diesel is $3.77, down two cents from last Monday. The New York average is $4.26, down two cents from last Monday.

To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
