Many of those travelers were returning yesterday and today, and the majority were traveling by car. 60.6 million people were expected to take holiday road trips setting the pace for a busy summer travel season with high demand for gasoline.

While pump prices are up, oil prices remain steady from last week ranging from $82 to $86 per barrel.

Diesel prices are relatively steady. The national average price for diesel is $3.84, up four cents from last Monday. The New York average is $4.24, down one cent from last Monday.

To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
