Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.59, no change from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.58. The New York State average is $3.67, down three cents from last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.71. AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:

•    Batavia - $3.64 (no change from last Monday)
•    Buffalo - $3.63 (down 2 cents from last Monday)
•    Elmira - $3.50 (down 3 cents from last Monday)
•    Ithaca - $3.68 (down 1 cent from last Monday)
•    Rochester - $3.66 (down 2 cents from last Monday)
•    Rome - $3.70 (down 2 cents from last Monday)
•    Syracuse - $3.65 (down 2 cents from last Monday)
•    Watertown - $3.72 (down 2 cents from last Monday)

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is resting at $3.59 despite a busy holiday weekend where AAA estimates over 38 million motorists drove 50 miles or more from home. New York prices are falling for the most part, reflecting the recent national trend. Motorists are benefitting from oil prices that remain in the high 70s to low 80s per barrel. In addition, the Biden Administration decision to release 1 million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve leading up to the Fourth of July is having a regional benefit as well.

Diesel prices are moving down. The national average price for diesel is $3.86, down four cents from last Monday. The New York average is $4.33, down three cents from last Monday.

To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
