The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is down six cents from last week to $3.53, the largest one-week drop so far in 2024. The national average has also dipped below the average price from one year ago. New Yorkers are also seeing pump prices fall. Steady oil prices, with the cost for a barrel of oil resting in the high $70s to low $80s, and modest demand for gasoline overall is offering motorists some savings as we move into the unofficial start of summer. The latest data from the Energy Information Administration indicates gas demand is down, while supply is up slightly.

Diesel prices are moving down. The national average price for diesel is $3.85, down two cents from last Monday. The New York average is $4.31, down three cents from last Monday.

To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
