AAA Western and Central New York encourages motorists to be extra vigilant this holiday season and to enjoy New Year’s Eve festivities responsibly. With limited activities available due to the pandemic, many people will celebrate at home – which is the safest place to be especially for those ringing in the new year with holiday cheer. AAA reminds drivers that if they do venture out, even to a nearby location, to plan in advance with a designated driver. 

As an advocate for traffic safety, AAA has supported more than 50 years of public education efforts against alcohol-impaired driving. Yet the work is not finished – more than 10,000 people are killed in alcohol-related deaths every year. New Year’s Eve festivities can be tempting, and AAA urges drivers not to drink and drive. 

There’s also a growing problem with drug impaired driving. “Marijuana, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications all lead to impairment and create dangerous, life-threatening situations on our roadways when users get behind the wheel,” said Anthony B. Spada, AAA Western and Central New York President and CEO. “AAA’s message to drivers: you cannot drive safely while you are impaired.” The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is a resource for motorists to explore how their medications may affect safe driving.
 
AAA Western and Central New York reminds New Yorkers that the rear seat belt law went into effect Nov. 1, so all passengers must buckle up in the back seat regardless of age. For holiday revelers who rely on ridesharing or taxi services, the new law does apply to passengers in those vehicles as well.
 
The year 2020 has brought many challenges, and AAA encourages all motorists to end the year safely. Being prepared is essential. Abstaining from alcohol and substances or having a safe ride home are two options that allow you to enjoy the holidays while being responsible. AAA WCNY does not participate in the Safe Ride/Tipsy Tow program, and this year, participating AAA clubs are suspending those services due to the pandemic. Safely planning transportation in advance is encouraged.
