Slow Down

AAA tow operators respond to more than 30 million calls for help each year. They work on roadside shoulders that are frequently no bigger than 4 feet wide. And while all 50 states have laws intended to protect these individuals, the loss of life is still too great.

About 400 roadside workers are killed each year across the country when drivers fail to slow down or move over. A contributing factor to this tragic statistic is that fewer than 30 percent of Americans even know about the laws.

This summer, when traffic and travel peak, please remember:

  • As soon as you see lights, vests or reflectors, slow down and if it is safe, move over.
  • Drivers must use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle or hazard vehicle, including police vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, construction and maintenance vehicles and tow trucks.
  • The Move Over Law applies to both sides of the roadway, not just the shoulder on the right.

Safe driving is important for everyone who uses the road. AAA provides driver training options that can help you lower your insurance rates while improving your driving safety habits.
