REAL ID

The deadline for REAL ID–compliant identification has been extended by one year until Oct. 1, 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic. REAL ID is an enhanced form of identification that permits its holder to board domestic flights.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles will offer both a standard REAL ID and an Enhanced ID. The Enhanced ID can be used to cross U.S. land and sea borders from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries without a passport.

Note that a valid passport meets federal standards for domestic flights and is required for international flights. There is no additional cost to get a REAL ID.

Regular transaction fees apply. There is an additional $30 fee to apply for an Enhanced ID Card.
