How to pause the clock and celebrate

How did it get to be the end of 2023? Or “How is it already 2024?” Those are common discussion points these days – and expect the topic of “time flying by” to be a popular one at this year’s holiday gatherings. When you apply that thinking to travel, the clock may seem to speed up even more. Consider the popular saying that “you only have 18 summers with your kids,” and it really sinks in. Parents go from buying crayons for kindergarten to dorm accessories for college in the blink of an eye. That’s why it’s important for families to prioritize and celebrate their time together.

“They’re asking, ‘What memorable trips can we take together that can truly last a lifetime?” explained Carol DiOrio, vice president of travel at AAA Western and Central New York. “Some are jumping on the trend early with infant children, while others are rushing to catch up with a family getaway before their high schooler heads to college.”

If you’re looking to push the pause button on your busy family life, and create treasured experiences, there’s no better way to do it than by escaping to a family vacation where everyone can let loose and relax. From beach vacations and cruises to tours about the history of Europe or the lure of an African safari, there are plenty of options and many factors to consider when booking a family trip. AAA is here to guide you every step of the way.

Cruises

There’s something for all ages at sea, but some cruise ships cater more to adults or couples, so talk to your travel advisor about the right atmosphere to meet your expectations and budget. AAA Advisors can arrange connecting staterooms if you’re traveling with a large family, while newer ships have accommodations for up to six travelers.

“Cruising is a great way for families to travel and see the world,” said Brian Murray senior manager of travel products at AAA Western and Central New York. He suggests families venture out to sea. “Alaska is full of adventures with majestic scenery and incredible wildlife that will have families in awe.”

Nervous about the notion? Consider a three- or four-night cruise out of Florida for starters, and you’ll likely be back for more!

Family favorites: Bahamas, Caribbean, Alaska, Greece

U.S. or Canada travel

Whether you’re taking a good old-fashioned road trip or flying out west to the national parks, there’s plenty to see in North America. Those traveling by car should use AAA’s free TripTik® Travel Planner at AAA.com/TripTik to look up gas stations, EV charging stations, hotels, campgrounds, and restaurants.

“If you’re flying, your AAA Travel Advisor can arrange family seating together in the aircraft with a window seat for little ones to stay captivated,” Murray said. “Remember to download movies and shows on your mobile device ahead of time and pack plenty of activities and snacks.”

International adventures

“Families are wasting no time when it comes to creating bucket lists for their travel goals, and many are planning well in advance,” Murray said. “We have some booking African safaris for 2025 or even 2026.” There are so many places to explore, and traveling internationally allows families to immerse themselves in culture, experience history, and capture Instagram-worthy photos. Don’t want to go it alone? Consider a guided tour where a professional leads your group so no one is left to navigate.

AAA reminds families to make sure passports are in order before booking international travel. Remember, child passports expire after five years. AAA can assist with passport photos and International Driving Permits.

Family favorites: Caribbean or Mexico all-inclusive beach vacations, Europe, Africa

So how are you going to pause the clock? With unlimited options to choose from, instead of only having 18 summers, you’ll be blessed with 18 unforgettable experiences as a family. And to let you in on a little secret, many young adults still enjoy traveling with the family, which explains why multigenerational travel is so popular. (But shhhh! Don’t tell that to the teenagers!)

Family travel passport

Want to make the most of those “18 summers?” The AAA Family Travel Passport is a new tool to help you come up with the best vacation destinations for your whole family. Young or old, every family member can fill out an online survey led by an adorable fictional cat named KeeKee of KeeKee’s Big Adventures. The responses are used to generate 18 years of personalized vacation ideas with both U.S. and international destinations. When you’re ready, AAA can make those dreams reality!
