Registering a car? You could be among the first in line for New York’s new Excelsior blue and yellow license plate design.

The state DMV took action last year to redesign the license plates after widespread peeling problems with the previous Empire Gold plates. An online vote was taken to pick the new plate design, with the winning graphic depicting Niagara Falls, the Adirondack Mountains, the New York City skyline and a lighthouse.

According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the new plates are now being issued for vehicle registrations in New York in counties that have ran out of Empire Gold plates.

You can order Excelsior plates at DMV offices (where available) and through the DMV website. The new plates and registration documents will be sent to you separately in the mail. In most cases, you will receive the new registration documents in the mail before you receive your plates.

To order online, you must provide:

  • the vehicle plate number
  • vehicle class
  • your name
  • your ZIP Code (on DMV records)
